24m Fast Cruising Catamaran Power-Sailer
Final Year Design Dissertation

The aim of this design dissertation is to investigate the feasibility of a fast
cruising motor-sailer between 20 to 25 metre which has good sailing performance
and achieves 25 knots under power. The feasibility study leads to a catamaran as
the most suitable vessel for this application. The preliminary design is
developed and critical areas such as hull shape, propulsion and weight are
investigated to a level that a judgement on the feasibility can be made. Since
both performance under power and sail is critical to the feasibility of the
vessel the performance is predicted by tanks tests and a VPP analysis. The
investigation shows that such a vessel is feasible but requires engineering
challenges to be solved.
